Interview: Proverb

By Michelle Hlubi

ProVerb has taken the television industry by storm with his charming and likable personality.

We caught up with him to chat about his success in the entertainment industry and his upcoming album.

You have come a long way since being a presenter at Channel O on Headrush
Yes I have been blessed with a nice steady growth in my career. It’s amazing how far I have come since the days when I was on Channel O. I started off doing Headrush, then I went on to do Survivor SA, and now I am the Idols presenter and an All Access presenter.

What has been your favourite development in your career so far?
My progress in television has been the most wonderful and I would like to be in TV for as long as I possibly can. I am also proud of my radio progression. I started out as a radio producer on YFM working on DJ Fresh’s show and now I have my own radio show on Highveld.

You have a brand new album on the way. What was the creative process and your inspiration for the album?
I will release my fourth studio album sometime in August but the title has not been announced yet. This album is special because it is not only my fourth studio album but also my first independent album. After being in the entertainment industry I have grown up a lot and I am learning new things all the time. The songs on the new album are about inspiration and aspiration and generally spreading the positive word.

Speaking of learning new things have you done anything that has taken you out of your comfort zone?
I have grown so much through the years and I am constantly working on new ways to develop myself as a person. I am now doing things like public speaking, I host various events and I am a brand ambassador for Volvo.

Tell us about your collaboration with former Idols contestant Boki.
Boki and I collaborated on a song called Paradise. The song is a spiritual song inspired by another song, Rosanna. The collaboration came into being when Bongani, my colleague from Highveld who also happens to have signed Boki to his label, told me he had the perfect song for me. It was only natural to have Boki sing on the track.

Do you plan on making songs with other Idols contestants?
Not necessarily. I like to collaborate wherever there is nice fresh talent and it’s an added bonus to collaborate with people who I am not expected to work with.

Catch Proverb every Sunday at 17:30 on Idols SA on M-Net, M-Net HD and Mzansi Magic.
