By Michelle HlubiIt's all over for the ladies of Wisteria Lane, take a look at how they changed throughout the seasons...
Everyone has a favorite Desperate Housewives character if you missed the finale, check it out on DStv On Demand until 9 August, and *spoiler alert* stop reading now!
The ladies of Wisteria Lane have been keeping us entertained for so long that we never thought they would leave.
Unfortunately the time came to bid Gabrielle, Bree, Susan and Lynette farewell. With the series finale still fresh in our minds, let's look back at how each housewife evolved through the seasons.
Bree
Throughout the seasons, Bree Van de Kamp has presented herself as a near-perfect domestic goddess. Who could forget the scene from Season 1 when she and her perfectly presented family welcomed their neighbor with a well-prepared muffin basket?

This impression faded during her battle with alcoholism in Season 2. It seemed that somewhere between finding out that her son Andrew was gay, that her husband Rex was cheating on her and that her boyfriend George had a dangerous temper, Bree lost her spark.
Her saving grace was her second husband Orson Hodge but their marriage could not survive the blackmail and betrayal.
In Season 8, Bree stands trial for killing Gabrielle's father. Mrs McCluskey saves her by making a false confession to the crime. Bree's lawyer Trip Weston wins her heart to become her third husband.
See some of the funniest Bree Van de Kamp moments below.
Susan
Susan Mayer has been quite the wholesome housewife since we met her in the first season of the show. So it came as a surprise when she started working in the adult entertainment industry in Season 7 to help pay the bills. This was after she and her husband Mike Delfino lost all their wealth when Mike couldn’t pay off his debts. Susan worked for a video chatting website when she wasn't working as a school teacher.
The series closes with a Susan leaving the Lane to help raise her granddaughter. She leaves under the watch of the ghost of her husband Mike and all the people who died in Wisteria Lane.
Gabrielle
Sexy senorita Gabrielle Solis has been Wisteria Lane’s eye candy for most of the seasons. But even with her good looks, the former model just couldn’t keep her wealthy and work-obsessed husband Carlos’s attention. To keep herself entertained she had a steamy affair with her young gardener John Rowland.
But getting a taste of her own medicine proved too much for Gabrielle in Season 3 when she left her husband after she found out that he had had an affair with their domestic worker.
She found love again in the form of politician Victor Lang. In a strange twist, Gabrielle married Victor and then cheated on him with Carlos.
Gabrielle’s high life and vanity went down the drain in Season 4 when she gave birth to girls who grew and grew and grew. She also lost her perfect figure and wealth when she remarried Carlos (who was now poor) and had to settle with her hair smelling like…hair.
Watch as Gabrielle finds out she is pregnant.
In Season 8 Gabrielle has reclaimed her good looks and is less vain, being a mother has changed her. She’s been working with the other housewives to cover up her father’s murder and stops Carlos from confessing.
The series ends with Gabrielle pledging to show more commitment to her relationship with Carlos while juggling a demanding career which included her own show on HSN.
Lynette
Lynette Scavo has always been the ultimate matriarch. In her household what she says goes. Her husband Tom has always agreed to being her understudy.
Lynette’s strength was tested in Season 4 when she discovered that she had cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy. As part of the treatment, Lynette had to shave off her hair and the wigs she wore spiced up her love life with Tom.
But the days of Tom being Lynette’s understudy ended this season. Tom decided he was tired of having Lynette walking all over him and asked her for a divorce.
A tear-jerking reunion between Lynette and Tom assures that theirs was a relationship built to last.
