Know your Newsroom cast

By Jason Von Berg

The highly acclaimed The Newsroom kicks off on M-Net tonight at 19:30.

The show is the creation of Oscar winner, Aaron Sorkin (also famous for his work on The West Wing and Moneyball).

The Newsroom chronicles the professional and personal lives / obstacles of a team working on the cable news programme, News Night.

Here’s a look at a few of the characters you’ll get to know:

Will McAvoy played by Jeff Daniels

Will is the anchor and the managing editor of News Night. A large measure of his success is due to the fact that he doesn’t offend those he reports on.

His seemingly perfect position on News Night in thrown a curveball when his ex and now producer, Mackenzie returns from Iraq. Question is, will he fluff his lines at the site of his old flame?

Mackenzie McHale played by Emily Mortimer
Mackenzie is a highly respected producer in the news world. She has just returned from a two-year plus assignment in Iraq. Did we mention that she and Will used to be involved romantically? Now there's a top story headline waiting to be unveiled.

Neal Sampat played by Dev Patel
You’ll recognise Dev from his role in the Academy Award winning Slumdog Millionaire. In The Newsroom Patel plays the role of Neal, a self-starting 21-year old journalist. He might be young but his portfolio includes covering the London terror attacks with just his cellphone. Got to love smart people with smart phones.

Sloan Sabbith played by Olivia Munn
Sabbith is the financial reporter come expert on all things relating to the economy at News Night.

Sloan gave up a big opportunity and an equally large salary at Goldman, in favour of her passion for reporting.

Catch these four and the rest of the excellent cast in The Newsroom at 19:30 on M-Net and M-Net HD.
